I’ve recently decided I really enjoy writing. I can’t say that this has always been true for me. I started this blog because I wanted to be a food blogger and I thought the Pioneer Woman was cool.
Who knew that exactly 13 years later (happy anniversary blog) I’d still have my little bloggy. I do still cook a lot, but now this documents my life and not my kitchen. and while I still refer to it for some recipes, I mostly look back to see what I was doing in June of 2016 or March of 2021 or when it was we took that one vacation to the the Dells where Lucy was wearing that adorable 2 piece and I should have been wearing self tanner because it was the middle of winter.
I stumbled upon a “writing prompts” list the other day and one said to think about your favorite song lyrics. And that felt crazy to me because I have been thinking about the lyrics to a specific song for a while now.
Here are a few of my favorite lines from the song Start a Band by Steve Moakler. Essentially it is a song urging people to "start a band" 😉
[Verse 1]
Learn a couple chords, close your bedroom door
Write down what you feel and sing it
Share it with that friend who's got his first drum set
Down in the garage and play it
[Pre-Chorus]
Count it off, one, two, three
Wear your heart right on your sleeve
Put your sticker on the back of the van
Make that sound that only you can
[Pre-Chorus]
Count it off, one, two, three
Got your name in lights on that old marquee
Lock eyes with that kid in the crowd
Give it all you got so he knows how
To start a band
Start a band
[Chorus]
Start a band
Pack it up and hit the road
Play that show where no one shows
Laugh it off and let it go
Start a band
Go on, get lost along the way
Find out what you have to say
Take on the world, get you the girl
Start a band (Start a band)
Start a band (Start a band)
Start a band
Start a band
Start a band
I remember exactly where I was the first time I actually listened to this song. I was running in Michigan, on the road to the big lake and I started crying. The message feeling so big and every single thing I believe in as a person. I want this for me. I want this for my kids, I want this for Sten, I want this for everyone. I think I am a dreamer, it's in there. But it's also hard to be a dreamer-- it's hard to live in the creative and be vulnerable and put yourself out there. I love the line 'wear your heart right on your sleeve, put your sticker on the back of your van, make that sound that only you can.' Isn't that good?! Isn't that what we were created for? to do what is making our heart beat-- the THING that God made us for?? I guess this all comes back around for me with my blog. I have many interests in life. I have a lot of unicorn spaces that make me, me. But I really do love to write. I really do love stringing words together and 'getting lost along the way'. so maybe that's why I love this song. Maybe it's because it's a reminder to me to 'start a band' to 'play that show where no one shows' because even if no one reads my writing, I hope to 'find out what I have to say' along the way.
